According to an MSNBC reporter standing outside the courthouse, Scooter Libby got 30 months in jail and a $250,000 fine for his conviction of perjury and obstruction of justice, and two years’ probation after he gets out of jail.
The hearing is ongoing still, and speculation is it is being decided whether or not Libby will be free on bail while he’s appealing his conviction.
This sentence seems to me to be overkill. Who did he murder?
Update: A bail hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 13, but the judge is giving all indications Libby should go to jail now and not be on bail while awaiting his appeal.
Go to Just One Minute to read the live blog done from the courthouse today while the procedings were going on.

According to the news he was convicted for obstruction of justice

Obstruction of justice for allegedly lying about a crime he didn’t commit, while the person who did commit the crime, Richard Armitage stays scot free.

This whole case has been a mess since the very beginning. You have a prosecutor who charged someone with Obstruction when it has been shown that is one of the easiest charges to make if you have no other case.
Long before Lewis Libby came into the picture, Richard Armitage had already exposed the name of Valerie Plame and Robert Novak prior to writing his piece was not denied the right to do so by the CIA.
This man was grilled on end without the use of his notes to refresh his memory and without counsel present. I have days when I can’t remember what I went upstairs for at the moment, can you imagine with all his responsibility the difficulty recalling every meeeting etc. with exact precision? It appeared at the time that Fitzgerald wanted nothing more than to have Libby roll on the Vice President.
We could go on for days going over all the intracicies of this mess but in the end in front of a liberal jury in DC and much of the defense case being disallowed by the presiding judge, this man will pay a price for a crime I do not believe he committed.
If in fact there was obstruction you need look no further than writers at many prominent newspapers who long before this entire investigation began knew of and had associated with the Wilsons.

Well, you know what Libby is really guilty of:
Being Republican While in D.C.
For that, there is no tolerance.

Probably the strongest point yet!
How do you possibly justify sending this man to prison for any amount of time on a bogus charge in a frivilous case but allow Sandy Berger to walk after it was proven he stole sensitive national security material?
It simply makes no sense unless you are correct.

We once had a neighbor who was busted on federal charges for running a stolen car ring. He didn’t get anywhere near the sentence Libby got.
Libby was the victim of a prosecutors’ judge and a prosecutors’ jury because he had been a member of the administration that took our country to war and that’s ultimately why he’s going to jail. Too bad the judge didn’t allow the exculpatory evidence to be entered into the trial instead of denying its entry because Libby exercised his constitutional right to not testify.
Instead, from reading Just One Minute, it appears papers the defense could not use in trial the judge would have allowed them to use in sentencing if they had just read his mind and asked.
The judge justifies this by saying the prosecutor couldn’t get to the bottom of the case because of Libby’s lies and obstruction, but Fitzgerald knew before he ever went after Libby it was Armitage who leaked the name and if leaking the name was the crime he should have been charged.
This seems to be a witch hunt of the worst kind.

Being Republican While in D.C.?
The prosecutor and judge were Republican. Do you really think this was political?
Let’s lay off liberal bashing We had nothing to do with this.

I had no idea that Sandy Berger had anything to do with this. If he did they should throw out his guilty plea and sentence him appropriately.

When you say “we” had nothing to do with this I assume you mean the average liberal in this country and not the political ones in Washington.
On this site there is no we and them.

Cal,
Chill out. You’re taking this personally and you shouldn’t. We all know Burger got away with a fine, a loss of legal license which he said he never intended to use again, community service and a laughing comment by the president he served to the effect of “That’s just Sandy. Always forgetting things.” He also lost his security clearance for just 3 years. How convenient, especially if Mrs. Clinton is elected president so she can use him as her NSA.
We have no idea what he took because not everything was duplicated. He actually stole documents from the National Archives.
No, he’s not a part of this case, but I think you are intelligent enough to realize Sue was making a comparison of the cases, charges and punishments.
You don’t have to defend everything someone says on here. They also have their right to an opinion.

I refuse to be naive enough to not believe that ones party does not make a difference in how things are perceived and proceeded against in Washington.
There are times the opposite may be true and a Democrat may be unfairly judged and I would hope I would defend that individual as well.
As for Sandy Burger, he may not have anything directly to do with this case but it does seem awfully strange that the justice department allowed him to virtually walk for something which you or I would have paid a price for an extremely long time. I was only attempting to show the vast difference in our justice system by citing that example.
And as for Fitzgerald being a Republican, that is questionable in many a mind..he may have been appointed by a Republican President but so was Souter on the Supreme court. I don’t really care as to his political affiliation but I do hope the whole story on this case comes out in the near future.

I personally think Libby is such a danger to society that he should have been hauled out of there in cuffs and leg irons to go to a maximum security prison.
