A six-year old boy, who had heard about blue-eyed cicadas in kindergarten, went on a search and found one.
I’ve probably seen cicadas and didn’t know what they were but I know how they sound and it’s a sound of summer here in the South. Apparently in the North too.
You hear them especially on hot summer afternoons when everything else is quiet and it would be a good time for a nap.
According to sources I have read the noise comes from their bellies as they make their way up or down trees. I’m not an expert so I don’t know how they make their noise, but it is a sign of summer, and when a bunch of them get going they can be pretty loud.
