Here is something that I just don’t understand. When I was young the Jewish people were considered by the Christians as Killers of Christ. What happened? I like most non-Christian people just can’t seem to figure this one out.
This post isn’t meant to be anti Christian or Jewish its just something that has been bothering me for a long time so please don’t come back with nasty comments about how I hate Jews and Christians. It’s just something I would like to know.
Written by GussThere were plenty of surprises at “A Night to Honor Israel” at Phoenix Symphony Hall on Sunday, June 24.
More than 1,600 people attended the $18-a-ticket event, sponsored by Christians United for Israel (CUFI), yet fewer than a dozen silent anti-Israel protesters stood outside the venue. Estimates are that between 300 and 400 of the attendees were Jewish, including Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky of Beth El Congregation, who sounded a shofar and chanted the benediction for the evening. The entire audience stood to sing “Hatikvah,” Israel’s national anthem. When the audience was asked to give money to support the Israeli communities of Kiryat Malachi and Hof Ashkelon, $50,000 was collected and presented to the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.
The Christian band Wild Branches sang “Hinei Ma Tov” and “Heveinu Shalom” while at least 50 members of the audience danced the hora around the auditorium. Former President Jimmy Carter was booed during a presentation of a short film about U.S. presidents’ support for Israel, produced by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee

Guss, I’m replying in a unofficial capacity although I have had a long relationship with John Hagee as a writer and consultant on a number of projects. The most recent is a new book, In Defense of Israel, which will be released in October.
The book addresses the Christian roots of anti-Semitism through early church teachings, such as the one you mentioned that Jews are “Christ killers.” He denounces that teaching and its tragic consequences over the centuries.
Video, audio and a printed transcript of his recent speech at AIPAC’s 2007 Policy Conference are available here. Dr. Hagee felt very honored to be the first Christian minister ever invited to address the group. Since 1981 he has been holding events called “A Night to Honor Israel” that bring the evangelical and Jewish communities together. The events, as well as the organization Christians United for Israel (CUFI) are nonconversionary.
I would be happy to respond here or by e-mail to any questions you might have. I’m new to your blog so I’ve been browsing around before commenting, and I appreciate the thoughtful tone and the encouragement of bipartisan dialogue here.
Happy 4th of July!

Connie Reece,
Thank you so much for the comment and information. I will look for the book and read it. Again thank you.

Guss,
I don’t want to argue with you, but since I thought we were raised in the same home at the same time, I must be mistaken and it had to have been we were raised in parallel universes with people who looked the same.
Never in our home did I hear anyone call Jews Christ killers. The first time I ever heard that phrase was when I watched the television series “The Holocaust” and heard someone say it there.
We had a wonderful friend who happened to be Jewish and we were told never to make fun of Jews or talk badly about them because Jesus also was a Jew.
If you will look at the bottom right of our sidebar you will see an Israeli flag with the phrase “I’m a Proud Friend of Israel”. I have had that on every blog I have owned and it’s because I am a proud supporter of Israel.
I support Israel so much that if our country ever betrayed her I would do all in my power to help her, even at the point of death to myself. I’m getting a little long in the tooth, but I can still pull a trigger on a weapon even if I have to sit in a chair to do it, but I would do all I could to help those in Israel.
We were also taught that God blesses those who bless Israel.
I hope you aren’t saying you got this Christ killers from Mama and Dada, because I was there too, and heard a different story.

You know as well as I do that when we were young Christians blamed Jews for killing Christ. It was everywhere we looked. In movies and when someone would get mad at the local storeowner who just happened to be Jewish.
It didn’t happen in our home. It was everywhere else and I think if you will take an honest look at history you’ll know what I am saying is true.
Now stop getting so the damn angry over a question. Read the first comment.

Asking a question doesn’t mean I am not a proud supporter of Israel.
I love Israel and am saddened every time I hear of a suicide bomber killing innocent people. I am a Christian down deep inside and sometimes I really don’t know the answer so I ask.

I’m not trying to be your conscience. I thought you were saying you were taught that at home and I took extreme exception to that because I knew that wasn’t the home we grew up in.
Now, having said that, you ran with a different crowd than I did. You hung around with the guys who went to church downstreet and I hung with the ones who went to church upstreet.
Maybe that’s why I never heard what you were saying until I was an adult.
Mama and Dada were very good friends of the Jewish merchants in our town. I’ve heard other people make fun of them, but never those two.

Christians who blame Jews for killing Christ don’t seem to acknowledge He came down off that cross and rose again on the third day.
This was the way it was meant for Him to die, and even He asked God the Father to forgive them because they didn’t know what they were doing and to whom.
He came to save the Gentiles as well as the Jews and it was the Jews who were the tools used to accomplish this end.
