I knew this was going to happen and am surprised it didn’t start earlier. I guess everyone is for sale if the price is right.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy but if he is this shady maybe I’m going to take another look.
Written by GussFormer Senator Fred D. Thompson, who has positioned himself as an opponent of abortion rights as he prepares to run for president, was hired as a lobbyist 16 years ago by a group on the other side of the issue, according to documents and people involved with his hiring.
The group, the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, hired Mr. Thompson in 1991, three years before he was elected to the Senate from Tennessee, as part of the group’s effort to overturn a ban on federally financed family planning clinics giving women information about abortion, according to the group’s board minutes and former president. The association’s president at the time, Judith DeSarno, said she was looking for a Republican lobbyist who could help find a compromise at a time when the first President George Bush was opposed to lifting the ban, put in place during the Reagan administration. Mr. Thompson, then a lobbyist at a prominent Washington law firm, fit the bill, she said.

One thing you have to remember is lawyers are often hired to speak for causes they don’t necessarily believe in themselves. I don’t know if this is the case here and didn’t read the block quote as I was up all night and can’t see very well, but he claims not to remember the client.
Maybe that’s true and maybe it’s not. He apparently spoke to someone on their behalf but the person he spoke to said nothing came of it.

Seems like the story I read said he spoke to Sununu who was chief of staff and he denied the conversation took place. I did check and it was Sununu. He says it never happened.
I don’t know how anyone can remember anything from 16 years ago.
Apparently they wanted a Republican lawyer to lobby for easing restrictions that would require federally funded family planning clinics to counsel about abortion.

Sorry J, I don’t buy it.

If I’m going to vote for him, I’ll do so because he is a man above reproach and it’s looking more and more like he isn’t. That’s just the way I feel.

And that’s your right, but show me any of the announced candidates who are men or women above reproach.

Before we condemn Fred Thompson, we should should demand the “family planning” group (an organization full of donors to Sen. Clinton’s campaign, btw) and the LA Tlimes (with its rather spotty record for accuracy) to produce some billing records.
Otherwise, it’s just another drive-by media hit piece done for the Clintons against one of their political opponents.
I lived in Arkansas for 20 years. I’ve witnessed how Bill and Hill operate and seen the many lives they’ve destroyed.
Let’s see the billing records.

Sturm:
First thanks for visiting.
I tend to agree the Democrates appear to be afraid of Thompson entering the race, otherwise why attack someone who has not yet declared.
It is a shame when politicians set out to personally destroy others. We need some serious investigation into many of these stories before they are accepted as fact.

J,
Can’t. I guess that I may not be voting.

Sturm,
Now let me see. Did I mention Bill and Hillary Clinton? I don’t think so. This is about me voting for Fred Thompson.

Guss,
That’s not a very good way to greet a new visitor. He lived in Arkansas and he was relating what he knew.

I hope, that poor old man Guss can get over the severe trauma he must feel every time that you criticize him for saying something wrong.

I’ll bet he can.
