Professor of Social Medicine reviews “Sicko” on Fresh Air
Very intriguing discussion of Sicko and US health care between Teri Gross and Dr. Oberlander.
I’ve heard many similar concerns over the years from my wife, a health care administrator, and doctors she’s worked with.

The last thing we need the government to get its hands into is our medical care. I don’t want socialized medicine so I have to go on a waiting list to have emergency heart surgery done. You don’t see Americans rushing to Canada to get health care, but you do hear of Canadians coming here to get life-saving treatments they can’t wait to get in Canada because the wait is so long.
No socialized medicine. Use Medicare or Medicaid for those who need it and it’s bad enough I have to be forced into that system when I reach age 65.

Oberlander argues against trying to adopt the Canadian model, and says we could learn something from Germany and Australia.
As for the “socialized” medicine–there’s no such thing in this world now as ‘capitalist’ vs. ’socialist’ health care systems. We’re all hybrids of one sort or another, with different levels of government intervention. Our federal and state governments already have their hands in health care, in very different ways.
The question for me how do we best ensure adequate and universal health care? Clearly, our system is not providing that now–so let’s look around and compare. That’s what Moore does. That’s what Oberlander does, but in a different way.

I must apologize to you and Guss for joking around today. I’ve not slept for two nights and tend to get slap-happy when I’m exhausted.
I’m slowing down now because my fingers are typing very slowly.
I’m just having fun with you and to be truthful I couldn’t take anymore of MMs movie commentary so I quit listening.
I just don’t want government involved in my health care.
If they want to set up a national system for the uninsured to buy good insurance at group rates then I have no problem, but I don’t want to pay a tax for something everyone doesn’t need. That’s why I resent having to go on Medicare when I reach 65. I have a good insurance policy and I’d like to keep using it, but Medicare will become my primary and I’ll have to fight with them over 80% of the charges and a private insurer over the other 20%. Right now I fight with just one over a dispute.
