I’ve been reading about the storms that have caused serious flooding in Great Britain.

Thousands are without power, buildings are flooding and more rain is in sight.
Since so many people thought Hurricane Katrina was caused by President GW Bush, I wonder how many Britons are blaming him for their floods? ![]()
At least, from other articles I’ve read, the Brits are taking this in stride and not asking for a handout.

Why not? We blame him everything for else.

And we all know he has these special powers, especially when that eeeeevil Karl Rove is involved.

When I think back to the Katrina disaster, I think the President would not have been blamed as greatly if he had not said: “You’re doing a heckuva job, Brownie.” At the time he said that, the full impact of the failures of the City, the State and FEMA had not been realized. When you really look at Katrina, a great deal of blame has to be placed on the City. I think the City shares the most responsibility, FEMA 2nd and the state 3rd. But, hindsight really is 20-20, isn’t it? Nagin should have mandated evacuation. However, even today, I saw a news story that said a majority of Gulf Coast residents would not evacute for a hurricane today. So, how do you deal with bull-headed citizens?

Katrina is a stain on this administration that will never go away. People can criticize the citizens of Louisiana all they want but the administration and the Republican Congress, for making it part of homeland security, bear responsibility for the ineptness of FEMA.
FEMA was a perfectly good running organization.
George W. Bush didn’t cause the hurricane but he did add to the horrific aftermath and anyone that can’t see that is in deep denial.

J,
I don’t mind kidding around when it comes to the president but when you mention Karl Rove it just makes my blood boil.

Count me as one of those in deep denial given there were two other states devastated by that same storm and we did not see pictures of them every ten minutes or have reporters shoving a microphone in the face of anyone who would speak on a consistent basis.
The Governor of Louisiana refused the assistance the President offered early on and the federal government had no jurisdiction there until she gave permission.
I am not saying the feds could not have done better, certainly they could have, but I place the blame initially on Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco.
You are correct David, hindsight is 20/20 and I hope everyone involved in this situation learned from their mistakes.

you’re entitled your opinion as well as I to mine. We are never going to agree on this and that’s just the way it is.

Guss,
Take off your partisan hat and stop using the Democratic talking points and get back to reality. I know sometimes you just like to stoke the fires for conversation purposes, but read David’s and Sue’s responses and you will know my position.
An inept governor (Democrat) who refused to even let the Red Cross go in when they were feet away from getting to the dome to help the people.
A mayor (Democrat) who let a parking lot full of busses sit there and not be used to evacuate the people.
Citizens who even now say they wouldn’t go. Give me a break!

You give me a break and stop lecturing me on how to think.
I hope we’re all around in 2009 so we can see the great change in attitude from all of us.

FEMA was such a good running organization that it hurt the first President Bush during the hurricane in Florida. Or have you forgotten Andrew and all the damage it did along with all the complaints of FEMA?
I wonder what people did about natural disasters before FEMA?

Some of us actually watch events as they happen and draw our own opinions. You accuse me of using talking points. Did you ever stop and think that maybe this isn’t a Democratic conspiracie theory? they are the facts As I see them.

FEMA existed long before GWB. Not part of Homeland Security, but it existed and people moaned and complained then too.
The fact is the Democrats have been so foolish about Katrina that anyone who had been asleep for 20 years would have thought, upon waking up, that GWB personally conjured up a hurricane that would destroy New Orleans, purposefully kept the National Guard from helping when he offered the assistance to the Governor before the hurricane, and personally kept those people in their homes so they could die.
That’s the fact as the Democrats are preaching it. “It’s all Bush’s fault.”
They’re never happy unless they can point a finger of blame at someone, and forget each time they point the finger three more are pointing back at them. Same goes for Republicans, but let’s don’t pretend the Democrats walked out of this clean and smelling like roses. They perpetuated this myth and tried to get votes from it; just as they are trying to get votes from these incessant hearings and war bills that go nowhere.
Lest you think this is a lecture it is not. It is my opinion made up from my own observations of news, and not just what some news channel wants me to see. All of them were pathetic during the Katrina coverage and would have done anything to make a bad story sound worse, even to the extent of not checking to be sure. This goes for Shepherd Smith at Fox News too. And how about the woman in the canoe trying to show us how deep the water was and a man walked right by her?
All for show. The president has no control over the weather.

You are right Guss, we will never agree on this issue, but I was not the one who accused people of being in deep denial.
Believe it or not, many of us watched a lot of the coverage of Katrina too, not from a political standpoint but rather from a humane standpoint. Why a tragedy such as this had to be turned into a political fiasco, I will never know.
Oh well, I think all these arguements have been had many times over and all will believe as they wish.

and anyone that can’t see that is in deep denial is an awful thing to say about people who don’t believe the same way that I do. I apologize to you and anyone else that I may have offended with that ridiculous statement.

Guss,
We wanted Democrat and Republican opinions when we first started this blog (you and I at first). You are our only Democratic voice now, but we hear you and everything is aimed at the targets of the discussion and not at any person on this blog.
You know my love for you is stronger than my political feelings and I feel secure in your love for me. Anything we say here is generally conversational and not confrontational, although sometimes I think people think they’re in the middle of a family argument with you and me.
They’re not. We are two hard-headed people with strongly held beliefs. Sue is the same. I don’t know about Sue being hard-headed, but she has strongly held beliefs.
Nothing said on this site should be taken personally by anyone else unless that name is mentioned and their conduct called out.
This is an experiment to see if we can get along as Americans and we are talking like ordinary Americans in mixed political company would talk.
I love you.
