Ethics Appear to be a Problem on Both Sides of the Aisle

I have heard of many dirty tactics and tricks used by Congress on both sides of the aisle but to remove the record of a legitimate vote goes well beyond the pale.

Via Captains Quarters:

The bitter partisanship in Congress will apparently get a lot worse after some shenanigans by Democratic leadership in the House last night. According to the Politico, the Democrats have not only attempted a revote after an embarrassing loss on an agriculture bill, but they’ve changed the records to expunge any mention of the vote they lost:

This is an absolute disgrace and those in the House who engaged in this behavior should be ashamed of themselves.

Again, the Captain:

The rules exist for a reason — to make sure that the House functions regardless of the rancor between its members. Once a vote has been gaveled closed, it becomes part of the record and should become official. Votes should not be changed after that point, nor should the entire record of the vote get expunged.

Payback isn’t right no matter who’s doing it.
It doesn’t surprise me and shouldn’t surprise you that the Democrats are rubbing it in the face of the Republicans. When the Republicans get back in power they’ll do the same thing to the Democrats so let’s stop acting like this is something new.

  • Sue:

    This is new Guss.

A vote can be expunged if Congress votes to do so, but I do not ever recall one being deleted because one side or the other suffers a loss.

Wrong is wrong and deserves to be pointed out no matter which side of the aisle commits the act.

  • Guss:

Welcome to the new Democratic Congress. Things are going to get a lot worse so buckling your seat belt. It’s going to be a nasty ride.

  • Sue:

I would like to believe you are wrong Guss but I fear you are right.

It saddens me that we have come to this point.Frown

  • Guss:

Pointing out wrong is good but it’s not going to change anything. I think that you can be sure that when the Republicans retake Congress they’ll do things to the Democrats things that are even worse. For some reason we seem to be on a track where the more you put down and disparage the other side, the more your party likes you. I’m not saying it’s good. I’m only saying that it is reality and I don’t know what to do about it.

  • Sue:

I wish we could find that answer Guss. I don’t try to think of of these issues in terms of party but rather following the rules which are in place to insure fair and accurate government.

How are we as a people to trust those in Washington when day after day we hear of another person or procedure gone bad?

This turn about is fair play is kindergarten mentality and should not be that of adults as it accomplishes nothing.

  • Guss:

    I couldn’t agree more.
