Here is something to ponder from the Right Wing Nut House.
Written by GussFor those who actually understand what the term means, there is no reasonable ground for objecting to the term “imperial” to describe America’s role in the world. Even our Foreign Policy Community elites have begun acknowledging that we are acting as an empire and are openly debating the best forms of imperial management. And the seemingly endless string of military interventions over the last several decades under a whole slew of “justifications” leaves no doubt that we see ourselves as world rulers who violate sovereignty and use military force at will, whenever—as Drezner himself said—we perceive that it promotes our interests to do so. That is what an empire does, by definition.

I’ve heard it said many times: we are an empire without an empire — at least now we are.
One thing that’s really struck me while researching the presidents is the notion of expansion and influence as a “right,” whether it be a God-given right or a natural right. Of course, I’ve known about Manifest Destiny since grade school, but reading the presidents’ own words in these regards has been quite illuminating.
See the Buchanan essay above; he had the most aggressive foreign policy of them all, even though many of his designs never came to fruition. Imagine if he had had his way and we had invaded Mexico to “stablize” the country!
The “right” of expansion and influence had the effect of a steamroller towards Indians in the 18th and 19th centuries, as we all know. In the 20th century, it probably is properly called imperialism as right wing nut house defines it, as I would largelyt agree with the snippet you have there.

Big Mo,
Now Mexico is invading us to destabilize. I couldn’t resist that.
