This is absolutely unbelievable. I take that back..no it’s not!

A top Democratic fundraiser whose criminal past has roiled the campaigns of top presidential candidates failed to appear Wednesday for a bail hearing and a judge issued a new warrant for his arrest.

Norman Hsu, who had been a fugitive for more than 15 years, forfeits the $2 million bail he posted last week. His attorney said Wednesday he didn’t know where his client was.

Hsu pleaded no contest in 1991 to a felony count of grand theft, admitting he’d defrauded investors of $1 million in a bogus investment scam. He was facing up to three years in prison when he skipped town before his 1992 sentencing date, Deputy Attorney General Ronald Smetana said last week.

During a hearing last Friday, Judge H. James Ellis ordered Hsu handcuffed and jailed until he could post $2 million bail, which he did after spending about five hours behind bars. The judge declined Hsu’s request to immediately reduce the bail by half, instead scheduling Wednesday’s hearing to consider the request.

The surprise development is the latest twist in the case of the California businessman who remade himself into a New York apparel executive and benefactor of Democratic causes and candidates. They included presidential contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose campaign designated Hsu a “HillRaiser” - a title given to top donors.

Federal Election Commission records show Hsu donated $260,000 to Democratic Party groups and federal candidates since 2004. Though a top fundraiser for Clinton, he also donated to Obama’s Senate campaign in 2004 and to Obama’s political action committee.

The judge in this case should never have granted bail and allowed Hsu the right to walk away in light of his status as a fugitive at the time let alone the future charges he may have faced.

Now will the Democrats return all monies he contributed to their campaigns either directly or indirectly?

Update: Rick Moran at Right Wing News
quotes the LAT in further information on the disappearance of Mr. Hsu. Seems his lawyers have known for a while that his passport was missing. Curiouser and Curiouser.

Also check this out: Looks like the vetting process for donations from Mr. Hsu do not include an address check.

Sorry if you find this story a snoozer Guss.

It’s my opinion we need to get out all pertinent information on someone like Mr. Hsu. If he were a fund raiser for a Republican or Republicans and was a fugitive from justice, I would do no different.

    Just a difference of opinion.

I hate to be blunt, but we sold our country out for Chi-Com donations with the last president and no one can deny it if they take a good look.

This man never should have been put on bail to begin with.

It’s not going anywhere. It’s only Republicans that care about this story and they will never vote for Hillary anyway.:p

    J,
People can get bail for just about anything but murder and even then some people do.

I think there might be some Independents out there who might just take a look at this story and yes even some moderate Republicans who are not happy with the field they see.

Why was he put out on bail when he was already under a warrant for fleeing to avoid a jail term already imposed? Someone must have mush for brains because he had already shown himself to be a fugitive and was under a jail sentence and should have been put in the pokey to start serving his time. At the least his passport should have been confiscated.

This isn’t going to quiet down, Guss. The right blogosphere won’t let it.

Judges all over this country release people on bail, who have been accused of horrendous crimes. Sometimes they commit another crime or kill a spouse who had them arrested for domestic abuse.
In the life of white-collar crime, I guess this guy was pretty minor. I can’t make any sense of it.

The right blogosphere only listens to each other. you might not realize it but it’s already gone away. It’s going to take more than this.
