That great prognosticator of current events in the House of Representatives, John Murtha, is predicting the Democrats will pick up 40 to 50 seats in the House in next year’s election.

We might as well pack it in, folks. He knows what he’s talking about. After all, he’s the one who wanted to redeploy our troops to Okinawa so they’d still be close to Iraq.

He’s the one who declared our Marines guilty of murder before they were found not guilty in courts-martial.

Congress has accomplished nothing in this session and he thinks the American public will be fooled once again into voting for the same do-nothing Congress, adding more do-nothing members to the Democratic side of the aisle.

Who knows? Maybe he’s right. Somehow I doubt it.

At this moment, in my state, he would be accurate. Senator Domenici, known here literally as “St. Pete” is facing the lowest ratings of his political career. Rep. Heather Wilson won against a weak opponent in ‘06 by less than 800 votes.
The do-nothing Congress has become perpetual it seems. Again, at this moment, the Democrats can say they tried to end the Iraq War and point out various methods that failed by veto. Every time the President uses the veto pen–which he must do–he also gives the Democrats a political victory. His speech was, in my opinion, mis-timed. The General’s report should have stood on its own for several more weeks. It was getting good media analysis here and the President diverted attention from the report. I was unimpressed with the speech, but primarily questioned why he even made the speech when he did.
That being said, it’s an eternity between now and the election and everything can change. The fact that the statement was made by Murtha detracts from the message but doesn’t make it inaccurate if the elction were today. The problem is, when the American people change their position to opposition of a war–any war–it’s impossible to win them back. I’m a Vietnam vet and I know the opposition only grows stronger as the a war continues. The success of the operation loses importance.

    David,

If the election were to be held this year he might be right, but a lot can happen in a year to change things around.

I suppose another reason he could be right is that even a broken clock is right twice a day.
