Mother May I
Have dinner with my family on New Years Day?
The more Fred Thompson talks, the closer I have come to supporting him for the GOP nomination.
While I was unhappy with the start of his candidacy, any politician who is willing to not feel beholden to the “mighty” MSM shows great courage.
Jane Skinner, at Fox News, does her best to challenge the former Senator with borderline ridiculous statements and questions, but Thompson leaves her spinning in the wind.
No matter the outcome in Iowa or for that matter in the race for the nomination, one thing is for certain, Fred will always have the memories of New Years Day dinner 2008 with his family.
My guess is, most potential caucus attendees were doing much the same, and those who were attempting to spread their message on January 1st no doubt had their words fall on deaf ears.

So, What’s Wrong With Corporations?
We hear more and more candidates and people on the Left complaining about corporations and how they make too much money etc. etc.
What’s wrong with corporations? I worked for what was at the time the largest corporation in the world. I made a salary that was really more than I was worth and had and still have excellent benefits.
Yes, the top executives got great packages, but if they knew how to turn a profit for the shareholders they were worth the money the board decided to pay them.
Board members made almost as much as I made in a year by going to one board meeting.
I saw the corporate headquarters and was taken on a tour of the boardroom and saw all the luxuries they enjoyed. I also went to where the real action was and saw people constantly coming down hallways from all parts of the central location, with work in their hands and a meeting to attend.
I attended some of those meetings and I can tell you it was all business and no small talk.
Corporations are what have given us the American Dream, with 401(k) plans in place to allow us to play the market just as the rich people do, only with less money and mostly by investing in mutual funds.
The dividends of these funds pay my husband’s and my living expenses now that we are retired.
Someone told me the other day that if we didn’t have corporations then we would have more small businesses that would hire more people. I don’t understand that reasoning, as the small businessman had to get his start somewhere and it was probably in a corporation where he learned to run a small business.
People complain about Big Oil as though it were the boogey man, but how much profit margin is there when they have expensive equipment to search for and extract oil, which may or may not be the best crude available? How much money is invested in refining that oil for the consumer to use? At the end of the day when they settle up on expenses vs profit how much of a percentage in profit have they made? And don’t forget a lot of that profit goes back to the shareholders.
The only alternative to having private corporations would be to nationalize everything and let the government run it. How do you think that would turn out? From watching our government in the past few decades I would say we would be wasting taxpayer money and the corporations would not turn a profit. Then where would we be financially?
Corporations are what keep our country running, along with the millions of small businesses. They put money into your pocket whether it be by the taxes they pay or the paycheck they give you.
I just don’t see why people hate them so much. If I’m willing to risk my money in a corporation on the hope it will grow faster than a bank account then what’s the problem? It’s a personal choice.
What I Plan to Do This Year
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions because they always get broken, but our entire household has decided a diet is in order and it’s easier for three to diet than one. We’ll see how far that goes.
I am sometimes too blunt and will attempt to be more thoughtful before spitting something out of my mouth. No guarantees there either.
I want to get closer to the Lord this year, learn more of His Word and His Will for my life. This is the most important thing to me.
I must finally give in and get those new glasses. The old ones have just about had it with me tightening screws daily.
I will find a candidate I think is suitable for the presidency. One with experience, a calm demeanor in times of crisis and who doesn’t try to change history just a few years after it happens.
Of the leading Republican contenders I think Mitt Romney is too slick by half and is running negative now. I don’t like negative.
Mike Huckabee is so inexperienced in world affairs and in federal affairs that I believe he would be a Jimmy Carter with an R after his name. He has also gone negative. Cross him off my list.
Rudy Giuliani seems to be sinking like a rock, although time will tell the story on that.
John McCain’s star is rising and except for his frustrating actions in the past I can go along with him. It’s the present and future I must look to, but the past shows what the future holds. I don’t want a party man but one who will be a man who will serve the entire country even if it means bucking his own party. His star is rising if you believe the polls.
If Fred Thompson had been making himself available throughout this campaign to tell us what he told us in his 15 minute speech trying to close the sale in Iowa, he would be a formidable candidate, and my heart is still with him.
Bottom line: I live in South Carolina and our primary comes right behind New Hampshire’s. Another small state that will have a big say in the nominees of the parties. If Fred is still alive in the campaign I intend to vote for him.
Otherwise it’s a tossup with McCain and Giuliani and there are faults with both of them. I am going to vote for the one I believe is the right one and not for the better of two evils. Then I’ll let God sort it out in the end.
I see no one on the horizon of the Democratic party I could possibly vote for. At one time I thought Richardson was a good candidate with experience but he stuck his foot in his mouth the other day when he suggested we force Musharraf out of office after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Not too smart.
Then there’s that dream vacation my husband and I have wanted to take to the West and see some of the National Parks. I want to go back to Hawaii but he wants to do the West tour first.
Other than that I just plan to be as good a Christian as I can be.
