We hear more and more candidates and people on the Left complaining about corporations and how they make too much money etc. etc.
What’s wrong with corporations? I worked for what was at the time the largest corporation in the world. I made a salary that was really more than I was worth and had and still have excellent benefits.
Yes, the top executives got great packages, but if they knew how to turn a profit for the shareholders they were worth the money the board decided to pay them.
Board members made almost as much as I made in a year by going to one board meeting.
I saw the corporate headquarters and was taken on a tour of the boardroom and saw all the luxuries they enjoyed. I also went to where the real action was and saw people constantly coming down hallways from all parts of the central location, with work in their hands and a meeting to attend.
I attended some of those meetings and I can tell you it was all business and no small talk.
Corporations are what have given us the American Dream, with 401(k) plans in place to allow us to play the market just as the rich people do, only with less money and mostly by investing in mutual funds.
The dividends of these funds pay my husband’s and my living expenses now that we are retired.
Someone told me the other day that if we didn’t have corporations then we would have more small businesses that would hire more people. I don’t understand that reasoning, as the small businessman had to get his start somewhere and it was probably in a corporation where he learned to run a small business.
People complain about Big Oil as though it were the boogey man, but how much profit margin is there when they have expensive equipment to search for and extract oil, which may or may not be the best crude available? How much money is invested in refining that oil for the consumer to use? At the end of the day when they settle up on expenses vs profit how much of a percentage in profit have they made? And don’t forget a lot of that profit goes back to the shareholders.
The only alternative to having private corporations would be to nationalize everything and let the government run it. How do you think that would turn out? From watching our government in the past few decades I would say we would be wasting taxpayer money and the corporations would not turn a profit. Then where would we be financially?
Corporations are what keep our country running, along with the millions of small businesses. They put money into your pocket whether it be by the taxes they pay or the paycheck they give you.
I just don’t see why people hate them so much. If I’m willing to risk my money in a corporation on the hope it will grow faster than a bank account then what’s the problem? It’s a personal choice.
