Watched the GOP debate this evening on Fox and here is how I would rate the performance of each candidate:

Tied for 1st: Thompson and McCain

2nd: Huckabee with Giuliani a close 3rd

4th: Romney and bringing up the rear, Ron Paul

Here are the results from the Frank Luntz focus group:

I remain uncommitted at this juncture. I do believe that if Thompson loses South Carolina his campaign is in serious trouble, however, it has been proven in the past that Super Tuesday has the ability to produce huge surprises.

This particular line from Thompson did reinforce the feeling I have that he would be strong on National Security..it also showed a bit of humor:

Placing Romney 4th in this debate was due primarily to the fact that he appeared once again very rehearsed and repetitive. At this juncture, he and Giuliani are faced with that same problem in my opinion.

There was not much new information garnered this evening. The candidates repeated the positions they have articulated throughout.

The biggest difference in this debate vs. so many of the others was that Fred finally injected himself in a way that could make this race even more volitile than it is at present.

I’m one of the South Carolina Republicans who was impressed with Fred Thompson’s performance. I watched the first hour of the debate and loved the virgins line. He made a good point. He wasn’t rehearsed or if he was it wasn’t obvious.

I go along with the majority of the focus group and, though I am not endorsing any candidate at this time, I will be voting for Fred Thompson on Saturday, January 19, 2008. I have to be true to myself and maybe I’ll be forced to vote for someone else in the general election, but for now I’m going with Fred.

As an interesting sidenote: we are seeing a lot of political signs for the various candidates all over our city now. I commented to my aunt yesterday that Ron Paul’s one supporter must be busy putting up all those signs.

I’m torn about what to do on Super Tuesday in MO, because we have an open primary. Do I take the Dem ballot and vote for hopeless woman from Hope or the hopeful naive man who’s note from Hope?

Or do I take the GOP ballot and vote for Fred? What to do.
