When I was a girl I didn’t have an allowance. If I wanted to go to the movies or get a cold drink I’d have to ask for the money. Since I hated asking for money I very seldom did it.
When I was working I can remember being shy about picking up my paycheck because I felt it was something given to me even though I had earned it.
When I went on business trips for the company or the union it was with an expense account. The company was much more generous than the union. I guess the union had to keep their funds for political purposes.
I joke there.
I never took advantage of the expense accounts and looked for places, even in Manhattan, where I could get a decent meal and not pay a fortune for it.
After all, it wasn’t my money to spend recklessly.
Now I read about former President Clinton taking advantage of every possible benefit available to him and I think he’s nothing but someone who never had anything and is now going to get every single thing he can get for free.
Yes, real estate in Manhattan is expensive, but I remember the big fuss over how much he was spending for office space when he first left office. There were other places just as nice with less expense associated with it.
If he is spending more than all the other former presidents combined (including Reagan and Ford while they were alive) for office space, telephone calls and staff the question comes to mind “why?”
This man and his wife are worth over $100 million on their own.
I almost flipped when I read before that his house payment is being made by us. Here’s how he does it: His house payment is a certain amount of money each month and he has to have secret service protection as a former president. He has rented space to the secret service on his protection detail that is equal to the amount of his house payment, so it appears that apart from eating, everything else this man gets is from using the system to get it.
Somehow I just feel he should be a little more fair to the American taxpayer since he says he shouldn’t be getting all these tax breaks for himself, and stop receiving the maximum of what the law says he can get.
Just because you can get it doesn’t mean you need it.
This unjustified lifestyle is enjoyed by the man whose flunkies never failed to call someone trailer trash. I have found that when you point a finger at someone you have three pointing back at you.
Here is a man who never had anything as a child or as an adult until he became president and now thinks he’ll just reach into the nation’s cookie jar and take all he can take, and he does it with no shame.
Those are the Clintons for you. No class and it shows.

I don’t think we will ever know the extent to which the nation has footed the bill for the Clinton’s.
When I think back to the condition in which they left the White House upon their departure, that in itself is enough to tell me how little regard they have for the taxpayer.

I think that you both need to calm down.

I’m not excited by it, Guss. I just think he needs to be a bit more self-reliant and stop charging the taxpayers for everything he does. I know he’s entitled to it because he’s a former president, but I also think he should be more prudent with the money he’s spending.
How many poor people could eat or get health care if he cut back on his expenses?

Gee Guss, if I get any calmer I’ll be asleep.
Believe me when I tell you I have given up trying to understand the Clintons. These days if one of them is not stepping in the mud the other is and it has gotten tiresome..hence the reason I have not written anything on them lately.
Anyhow, off topic but how the heck are you? I hope your weather is beginning to warm up a bit and that snow is a thing of the past!

Is this a good posting to touch on a bunch of extraneous subjects? We’re getting a freeze tonight, so I’m heading home to cover my tomatos. As for an allowance-I got $1.00 every two weeks when we went to town and I would always buy a book. The latest Hardy Boys book as I recall.
On politics, we dedicated our new federal courthouse to Senator Domenici today. The two GOP Congressmembers (Heather Wilson and Steve Pierce) are getting dirty over who is more conservative. Tom Udall, as a result, will pick up that seat. He has no opposition in the primary. His District will stay Democrat and Rep. Wilson’s district will likely go Democrat. I think the GOP will only keep one seat in New Mexico. Our state party is split into two factions and all the GOP primaries are turning nasty here. This all started in 2002, when GOP Governor Gary Johnson proposed legalizing marijuana. The Democrats stayed out of that fight and now we have medical marijuana and a Republican party that has never healed.

Geez David..not good news on those House seats. But you know what, it might be a good thing as perhaps the GOP will realize they really do need to get their stuff together.
Much as I don’t relish losing more seats in Congress, (especially if the Dems win the White House), back to back losses “could” force out some of the dead wood the Reps. have been carrying and bring in some new blood when the tide changes.
As for the allowance thing, I never did get one either. Things were on a must have basis and anything extra was just that..a real treat. Somehow I think we were and still are all better for it. When you bought your book you were no doubt happy to have it and not looking for the next thing. If I received a gift or a treat or an outing it was always looked upon as special.
Now for those tomatoes. I wish I had the knack for growing them. I have tried several times but cannot seem to get them past the green stage before they begin to rot (any suggestions)? I can do cukes, herbs and peppers but never those elusive tomatoes.

Sue-on the tomatos, could be too much water. I can’tremember where you live, but they like hot weather, good sandy soil for drainages and not a lot of water. On the topic of the allowance, my parents never expected us to buy our necessities, so the money we were given when we went to town every 2 weeks really was “for fun” money. We would all meet at the end of the trip at the town library and everyone would get 5 books (the maximum), except Dad, who had to quit school after the 2nd grade when my grandfather was killed in the coal mines. He was basically illiterate. Mom read aloud to all of us each night after dinner. Finally, for our state GOP, I’m surprised this intra-party conflict has lasted so long over what I thought was one basic issue. However, in really, it is a fight for the soul of the state party. Some feel there is no room for moderates in the GOP. Some feel there is no tolerance for deviation from the party line on even one issue. For example, I’m opposed to the death penalty and on that issue I don’t fit into either party. That’s just no big deal with me. I know I’m not in step with the majority of Americans and it’s a personal issue for me, i.e. my opposition is based on solely my own moral beliefs. Therefore, I do not expect to fit into either party on that niche and it’s not important to me that I do. I do feel, however, the GOP has not honestly recognized we can make room in the tent for folks who do not follow the line on every issue. The Democrats here have done a remarkably better job of keeping their fights quiet. One great ray of hope here is the ability of both parties to work so very well together in the state legislature. I honestly cannot remember the last time ANY issue in our state split strictly along party lines in the Legislature. Here in a Catholic state, we have some very conservative Democrats, too.

Thanks for the tips on the tomatoes. My grandkids want to try them again this year, so I will add some sand to the soil and try to water less and see what happens. (PA is my home state David..maybe that’s the problem)
As for being a moderate in the GOP, I agree it is very difficult. Actually, moderates in either party don’t really have a home at the moment. This I think goes to the heart of the problem with politics in this country today. It could also explain why we see more states turning purple rather than red or blue. If you happen to be fortunate enough (as you are) to live in a state where party lines are not paramount then governance is somewhat simpler. While one might not always agree with decisions lawmakers make, if it is done with civility and decorum, somehow it is easier to swallow.

Republicans would gladly let go of the Clinton’s if they took themselves off the political stage. When you put yourself out there as a Presidential candidate then criticism will come from those who disagree with your proposed policies etc.
I don’t think we make things up here at J’s simply to criticize the Clintons. If you look back over the pieces written, the information is either right from the horses mouth or documented on paper.
As you have your disagreements with the current President, there are those who have many with not only former President Clinton but many others.
Frankly speaking, I have had my fill of Bushes and Clintons.
It is time for the country to move on. I might have great respect for President Bush but the divisions the Clinton and Bush administrations have created in this country is troublesome. No rose colored glasses here though..a change of a name at 1600 Pennsylvania will not immediately change the political climate but it might quiet it down for a bit.

Mar,
I said Clinton was entitled to everything he is getting. I just wondered why any president takes more money from his benefits than the other four (at the time) former presidents combined.
Yes, real estate in Manhattan is high, but he could have cut a better deal in another spot in Manhattan. How often is he in that office anyway?
Why is he charging his mortgage payment to the United States as rent to the Secret Service detail that protects his life? Doesn’t that sound a bit conniving to you?
You claim we are Republican lambs when in fact the same could be said about you and the Democrats.
There is enough stain on all of them that none of us should be bragging.
Like Sue, I see the faults of the current president, but I’m not going to beat a man when he’s down and especially a president who is trying to keep us safe whether or not any of us like the way he has done it. We haven’t had a terrorist attack on our soil since 9/11.
Let’s hope it stays that way.
David, like you, I am a moderate in many things but a conservative fiscally. This is where I part ways with the last Republican Congress and the president. Too much free spending and they paid the price for it.
I also oppose the death penalty unless someone can prove beyond any reasonable doubt this person committed such a heinous crime and would succeed in escaping from prison, that such person should be put to death.
If someone can easily escape from maximum security in a prison then there’s something wrong with our prison system.
Let the convicted rot in jail while thinking of what put him there.
