“It is good to be home”
We haven’t seen much of former President George W. Bush today, and that is as it should be on the inauguration day of a new president.
I have had to search high and low to find a video of him speaking to the fine Texas folks who welcomed him home. I have seen estimates of between 20,000 and 25,000 people at the welcoming ceremony. At any rate, the people of Midland, Texas, and surrounding areas love this man and his family.
Here is the only embedable video I was able to find and I’ll have a quote after the video:
“The presidency was a joyous experience, but as great as it was, nothing compares with Texas at sunset,” Bush said, standing next to his wife. “Tonight I have the privilege of saying six words that I have been waiting to say for a while — It is good to be home.”
Thank you, sir. Some don’t realize it yet, but you kept us safe after the 9/11 attacks. Now, enjoy your much-deserved retirement and watch your approval ratings go up within a year.
Update: The Anchoress has a review of today’s inauguration speech
You small, petty, adolescent people, all of you ignorant fools who boo’ed the outgoing president and jeered at him – remember all those jeers and boos when you get into the subway cars that do not blow up or the planes that do not fly into buildings, on your way home. You just took part in a huge gathering – a terrorist’s wet dream of an event – and you were completely safe. Who do you thank for that?
You thank BUSH, you immature ingrates!
And:
Federalists Paupers pronounce: Petty!:
How petty do you have to be to denigrate and take pot shots at your predecessor right after you’ve being sworn in as president? You’re going to have the next four years as president, and one day you’re not going to be as popular as you are at this moment. I’m sure, whenever your successor is being sworn in and you’re sitting there powerless in front of millions, you’ll appreciate not having someone who has no conception of how hard the job is, but who is suddenly the most powerful man in the world, talk about you like you’re chopped liver. Campaign’s over, dillweed; try to act presidential.
6. That poet chick was terrible. Simply, utterly, terrible. To fit in with my overall theme, I’d like to call her performance petty – and, truly, it was self-absorbed to an unseemly degree – but the most appropriate word for it is “terrible.”
…a bunch of very small people on a very big stage.Perhaps if Obama had been more gracious in his speech, the crowd would have taken their cue and behaved themselves.
And I Got a Lump in My Throat
I turned on the Fox News website and the headline informed me there was a prayer service going on at St. John’s church for soon-to-be President Barack Obama.
I figured it wouldn’t hurt to watch a prayer service.
Instead, what I saw was Vice-president-elect and Mrs. Joe Biden going through some doors with 2 marine guards standing there. Thinking it was still a church as I saw a lot of people gathered inside I continued to watch.
I then saw the Obama car drive up and the famous columns. I watched as President and Mrs. Bush stepped out of those glass White House doors and the Obama’s got out of their limo.
The men shook hands and kissed the ladies and the ladies hugged and kissed each other. Mrs. Bush had a gift for the Obamas in her hand and President Bush asked everyone to stand for a picture. And I got a lump in my throat.
They then walked inside and I saw Mrs. Bush hand over the gift to one of the social secretaries at that time, and it was then that I went from a feeling of nostalgia to full-blown tears of sadness for the treatment of what I consider to be one of the best presidents this country has been blessed to have.
Now I know I will not be able to watch the official changing of the guard for sure.
Mr. and Mrs. Bush look very happy and like they don’t have a care in the world as our country, once again, goes through a peaceful handover of power.
Thank you, Mr. President. Seeing you go is even harder for me than watching President Reagan go, and that’s saying a lot.
Godspeed, Mssrs. President
