Uh-Oh

If this information is correct, Congressman Joe Wilson might have done himself far more harm than good last evening:

Simon sez, “I managed to track down a spokesman for ActBlue, the online fundraising tool for Democratic politicians, and found out that within two hours after Joe Wilson yelled out ‘You lie’ to the president, his opponent Rob Miller raised $25,000 from people who linked to his page on Twitter and blogs.”

The numbers are still going up.

Update: and UP! More than $69,000 now.

The constant play this is receiving today might only increase these numbers.

I do not know the make-up of the Congressman’s district in South Carolina but I hope it is a safe Republican area or he may find himself in a real battle for his seat.

  • The money is coming from outside groups and, though I don’t know the district he represents, I would say his constituents will vote for him. Remember, he only said what the rest of America said in town hall meetings.

  • According to this Wikipedia article the second congressional district has been in Republican hands since 1965.

His current opponent is his previous opponent and garnered only 46% of the vote in the last election.

The district covers the capitol city of Columbia, Orangeburg (I would think it is predominantly democrat due to the racial makeup of that area), Hilton Head (probably Republican due to the elite population). It also covers Beaufort, which is a military area. I think his seat is safe, particularly since he called a lie a lie and Obama had been calling the Republicans liars all evening.

    • I just checked Wikipedia and of six congressional districts only two are in Democrat hands. Unfortunately, one of them is mine, but the population of people who work in Charlotte, NC and live here for the lower taxes is growing and Spratt had a real run for his money in 2006. He had to resort to constantly talking about his opponent’s construction company, saying he employed illegals.

His opponent, a local man, says he hires legal aliens. (He builds great houses, by the way). Who knows unless you go through the payroll, but Spratt had a close call that year and if he goes for another big spending bill, being the chairman of the Budget committee, he may be bounced in 2010 if 2010 is a good year for Republicans.

  • Sue:

    Thanks for all the information!

Don’t have many hours right now to do the research so I really appreciate you taking up the cause.

Let’s hope we hold this seat without too much difficulty as we know how the Democrats will use this situation come election time.
