The era of Jon Corzine — as senator, governor and the state’s most unabashed liberal leader — ended tonight at the hands of a political neophyte who ran as an unapologetic conservative.
It was the first Democratic loss in a statewide race in more than a decade, one that gives Republicans the ability to raise money and rebuild, to reshape the Supreme Court, to finally exercise some real power after their long years in the wilderness.
A year after tipping Democratic for president for the first time since 1964, Virginia fell to Republicans in a dramatic statewide sweep that is a historic reminder of its enduring competitiveness — but may not be a model for a national GOP comeback.
“It’s not a red state,” said Jay Timmons, chief of staff in the governorship of George Allen, whose victory in 1993 led the last Republican resurgence.
“It’s a highly competitive state, where voters expect those they elect to be in tune with pocketbook issues, create jobs, and promote growth in the economy. Party is not an issue — it’s who they believe will support the right policies.”

How sweet it is to win, but how much sweeter it is to be able to savor a victory that was stolen from Obama in New Jersey despite his five stop campaign for Corzine.
You could just about tell from the way the anchors and pundits were talking last night that Corzine had lost but they didn’t feel comfortable yet telling us who the winner was.
I look for good things from Corzine and pray he is a successful governor who will lower the tax burden on NJ homeowners and residents, and will be able to do what he said he wanted to do if elected. A great win indeed!
I’m proud of Virginia for running a great campaign discussing the issues and for the margin of victory. Again, it is up to the winners there to do what they promised and everything else will take care of itself after that.
