In America Royalty Need Not Apply
Bill Whittle defines in quiet, concise words “why” The Declaration of Independence should be held dear by every American, no matter political persuasion, race or religion.
(Yes, a ten minute video seems long by today’s standards, but I promise you, this one is well worth watching.)
Just a few blocks away is Ford’s Theater, and across the street, the Peterson House where Abraham Lincoln spent his final eight hours of agony. To go from that dingy, cheap little flophouse and then to the marble temple at the far end of the Mall produces a profound reaction in the human heart. But nothing I saw affected me as did the Declaration of Independence. I expected to be filled with reverence and awe. Instead, I was overwhelmed with despair.

I watched the whole thing. Very nice. Thanks. I’ve visted that Peterson House and Ford’s theater and of course the monuments. I do love listening to Lincoln’s quotes. He really was a great writer. Probably the best of any president.
I’ve wanted to march with the tea party back in Semptember and I was ready to go down. But unfortunately my nephew scheduled his wedding on that day and I couldn’t. Next time there’s a march in DC against the Obama agenda, i’m going. It’s only a four hour plus drive for me.
DC holds a special place in my heart as that is the place of my birth.
I had the pleasure of spending my early years in housing on the base at Ft. McNair. Our family made the trip back many years later for my Dad’s retirement from the US Army. One of those full circle things, I suppose.
If you do go back to visit, check out the schedule for the events there. If you have never seen The Old Guard in formation for Twilight Tattoo you might enjoy the performance.
Of course DC has changed over the years, with new monuments erected etc. but each has enhanced the historic atmosphere, not diminished it.
Our children spent many a vacation on the Mall and being fascinated with the many exhibits at the Smithsonian museums. To this day they still talk about their times in DC. Now is is time for my grandchildren to experience a large portion of the history of their country. How time does fly.
Thanks Sue, I’ve never heard of The Old Guard. I will try to do so. If you haven’t been to DC in recent years, I must say they have done a magnificent job withe the new WWII memorial right on the Mall. It fits beautifully, as if it was always there. I guess if you Google Images, you might see some nice photos. But they won’t do it justice. A trip is worth seeing it.
