Senator Specter Defeated

Good News!

On to November and what should prove an interesting race between Pat Toomey and Representative Sestak.

U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter on Tuesday was defeated in a Democratic primary in his bid for a sixth term after taking the risky step of switching from the GOP.

Voters picked U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak as the party’s nominee and rejected the 80-year-old Specter in his first Democratic campaign since his Republican Party defection.

With 79 percent of precincts reporting, Sestak received 435,630 votes, or 53 percent; Specter received 384,027 votes, about 47 percent.

The vote also was a defeat for President Barack Obama, who supported Specter when he abandoned the Republican Party last year. In speaking to supporters at a downtown Philadelphia hotel after the race was called, Specter thanked Obama for his support.

As for PA-12, Jack Murtha’s old seat, congratulations to the Critz campaign.

My heart was certainly with Tim Burns, but my head all along told me what a difficult race this would be to win in an area of the state with a 3-1 democrat favor-ability margin. Thanks to the Burns campaign for making this a race in a District which at any other time is a given for the Democrats.

  • Let him go quietly into the sunset of his years. First a Dem who changed to Republican to win a local election, used funds from Republicans and President Bush to get elected six years ago, then thanked everyone who supported him with money and votes by giving the Dems the super-majority they needed to ram anything down our throats.

    Good riddance.

  • I used to have a soft spot for Specter, despite he not being anywhere near a conservative. He was always tough on crime and when that was a big issue I appreciated it. His flip over to the Dems was despicable and I lost a lot of respect for him. And as jeanette points out his flip gave the Dems that 60 seat grip on the Senate. Don’t let the door slam you too hard Arlen as you leave.
