Peter Moody brings one runner to Warrnambool for the carnival and that’s (12) Life Lessons, who was terrific on debut behind Fuller at Sandown. They pulled 7L clear of the 3rd horse, which is generally a very good indication that the first two are above average. Doubt Moody would be bringing her all the way to Warrnambool if he didn’t think she’d win.

(1) Runaway looks a bit short for my liking given he hasn’t won a race over the jumps since April 2020. He does have a great third up record and gets Steven Pateman booked for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, but I’d be reluctant to dive into the $2.15 on offer.

I’d rather be with the other favoured runner (8) Under The Bridge, who comes off a first up win on the flat at Werribee, over 1600m. Now takes on the jumps over 3450m, so it’s an unconventional set up, but I wouldn’t be doubting this stable, who saddled up 10 runners on Day 1 for five winners.

The day’s feature sprint is the Wangoom Handicap.

Plenty of eyes will be on the favourite (4) Showmanship who has won seven of his eight career starts, but returns from 86 weeks 600 days off the track after injury. There is very little doubt that he’s the best horse in the race on best form, but to win this race first up from such a lengthy lay off would be a quite remarkable effort. He’s out to around $4.20 now and I’m happy to save on him as a horse with a record like his can’t be underestimated.

(9) Inn Keeper shapes as the best of the roughies. He’s getting on now as an 8YO but he did win this race last year and the Wilde stable were red-hot on day 1 with five winners. He goes well second up and most importantly, gets his desired wet track. $11 looks a bit of value.

(15) Triple Missile could be the best of the Lindsey Smith runners and I’m particularly interested to see what he can do in Victoria. He is a very smart horse with a big finish on him. He was disappointing in two runs in February but he’s made his way to Victoria now and goes very well first up. If Lindsey has him right, he’ll be storming home from the back.

(10) Bless Her gets a much needed wet track and can be included.
